Orangutans Everywhere Win

Animals |

They say this may be the beginning of the end of zoos. I can't say I agree or disagree, I'm not sure how I feel about it. To have animals kept for show for our pleasure is technically animal cruelty. Is it right to keep them? No. Is it right to let them go into the wild now after they have been for show? No. So what do we want?

It's not the easiest thing to decide really. Everyone loves the zoo, it's a really nice place to go. You can see all sorts of animals from all over the world all in one place. They aren't mistreated, they are fed, they play, they have interaction with others of their kind, they aren't being harmed. Is it wrong? Probably. Do we do it only for our pleasure? Yes.

When you sit and think about it, it really isn't right what we have been doing for so many years. It's actually really sad. These animals were taken out of their natural habitat or bred because we wanted to look at them. That's wrong. How would you like to be put in a cage for show? To be fed only at certain times? To have interactions with humans that you don't necessarily like?

Now that I think about it more and more, I guess I am against it more than I'm for it. Don't get me wrong, I have been to zoos and probably will take my children to the zoo when they are old enough, but...I can't say I agree with keeping them in cages just for our pleasure. Hopefully one day, these animals will die off, poor things, and none will be brought in to replace them. Zoos will then be something in history.
